Chiefs Fall to Bandits 7-1 Tuesday

Peoria, IL - Despite scoring first for the fifth game in a row the Peoria Chiefs dropped a 7-1 decision to the Quad Cities River Bandits Tuesday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss marks the first time this season the Chiefs have lost consecutive games as they fall to 2-3 in 2012 heading into the series finale at 6:30 Wednesday night.

The first batter for the Chiefs, Zeke DeVoss, lined a single off the head of Quad Cities pitcher Kyle Hald. Hald remained in the game but his defense didn't help as Marco Hernandez reached on an error by Luis Mateo at second base as DeVoss scampered all the way to third. For the second night in a row Rafael Lopez gave the Chiefs a 1-0 first inning lead with a sacrifice fly to right before Hald escaped the inning.

The River Bandits rebounded to not only tie the Chiefs, but take the lead in the top of the second. With one out, David Medina reached on a throwing error by DeVoss at second and Mateo singled to left. The Bandits took a 2-1 lead after Roberto Reyes singled home Medina and Mateo scored on a throwing error by Reggie Golden in left field. Juan Castillo added to the Bandits lead with a sacrifice fly before Willengton Cruz got out of the inning with the Chiefs down 3-1.

Quad Cities wasn't done adding to their lead in the top half of the third. With one out, Cruz walked Colin Walsh and allowed back-to-back singles to Garrett Wittels and Medina. Medina's single was an RBI base knock as Walsh scored from second to make it 4-1. Mateo stepped in next, and made it 5-1 with an RBI double to center.

The Chiefs had a chance to get back into the game in the fourth inning but came up empty against reliever Wily Paulino. With one out Taiwan Easterling was hit by a pitch as was Reggie Golden. Wes Darvill drew a walk to load the bases by Eduardo Gonzalez bounced into a 6-3 double play to end the threat.

The game stayed 5-1 until the ninth inning when the River Bandits added two runs against reliever Luis Liria. Mateo led off with a double and Reyes drew a walk before Castillo singled home a run. After a walk loaded the bases, the Chiefs turned a double play as Reyes scored for a 7-1 Bandits lead.

Cruz (0-2) went 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on seven hits. He walked one and struck out two in his first start of the season. Scott Weismann replaced Cruz in the fourth and hurled 2 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts. Jeff Lorick struck out three in his two perfect innings of work. Liria allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with a strikeout in one inning of work.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Scott Weismann (RH) - Weismann was perfect out of the bullpen in relief of starter Willengton Cruz. The right-hander threw 2 1/3 innings, striking out two, without allowing a single baserunner.
