Lansing's Hernandez Stifles Dragons

Dayton, Ohio-Lansing starting pitcher Jesse Hernandez allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings as the Lugnuts topped the Dayton Dragons 6-2 on Tuesday night before a crowd of 8,115 at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons fell to 2-3 on the season while Lansing improved to 5-0.

Hernandez (1-0) did not allow a ball to leave the infield over his seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight in a commanding performance.

The first 18 batters of the game were retired as both teams went down in order over the first three innings. The first hit of the game was a lead-off single in the top of the fourth inning by Lansing's Kenny Wilson. Dayton's first hit came in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out infield single by Ryan Wright.

The Lugnuts snapped a scoreless tie with five runs in the fifth inning. Andy Burns belted a two-run home run to start the scoring. With two outs, Carlos Perez added a two-run single and K.C. Hobson later drove in the final run of the inning with a base hit to make it 5-0. Lansing added an unearned run in the sixth keyed by an RBI single by Kellen Sweeney.

Dayton scored both of their runs in the eighth inning. With two outs, Juan Perez walked, and Danny Vicioso followed with a double to the right field corner to bring in Perez. Theo Bowe followed with an infield single to move Vicioso to third. Bowe stole second, and Vicioso came in to score on the play when the throw by the catcher sailed into center field to make it 6-2 and close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Carlos Gonzalez (0-1) did not allow a base runner until the fourth inning and was unscored upon until the fifth. He left the game trailing 2-0 with two outs in the fifth but was charged with two additional runs. His final line included four and two-thirds innings, three hits and four earned runs with three walks and five strikeouts as he suffered the loss.

Dragons reliever James Allen worked two and one-third innings in relief of Gonzalez, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and one strikeout. Centerville's Dan Jensen tossed two scoreless innings to close out the game for the Dragons, allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Dragons collected three hits including Vicioso's RBI double as well as singles by Wright and Bowe.

The Dragons and Lugnuts meet again Wednesday at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. in the last game of the three-game series and the finale of the Dragons season-opening six-game homestand. Justice French (1-0), who fired six scoreless innings on opening night for the Dragons, will make his second start. Anthony DeSclafani will start for Lansing in his second appearance of the season. He tossed three scoreless innings in his first outing. The Dragons begin a seven-game road trip at South Bend on Thursday night and return to Dayton on April 19 vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits.

Notes: Before Tuesday's game, Dragons infielder James Ewing was promoted to Bakersfield. He was replaced on the Dayton roster by infielder Brandon Dailey, who comes in from extended spring training in Goodyear, Arizona.
