Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Abel Baker's walk off RBI single in the ninth inning scored Gary Mitchell to give the Kernels a 4-3 win over Clinton on Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field.
The ninth inning began with a walk by Mitchell. He then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Scioscia. Mitchell went to third base on a wild pitch by Clinton's Wes Alsup and scored on the Baker single. Lay Batista (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Kernels. For the second straight appearance, Batista threw four innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one unearned run on two hits.
Alsup (0-1) took the loss for the LumberKings. He went 1.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit while striking out none and walking one. Clinton took an early 2-0 lead with a two RBI double by Dan Paolini in the second inning. The Kernels cut the lead in half with a RBI single by Chevy Clarke that scored Trevor Hairgrove and cut the lead to 2-1.
For the second straight night Frazier Hall delivered a home run to right field, and for the second straight night the Kernels took a one run lead on a home run in the sixth inning. Hall's sixth inning blast brought Kaleb Cowart along for the ride, and the Kernels took a 3-2 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the LumberKings scored an unearned run in the seventh inning. With two outs, Paolini reached a missed catch error by first baseman Hall. This allowed Alfredo Morales to score and tie the game 3-3.
It stayed that way until the Baker RBI single in the ninth.
Michael Johnson started for the Kernels and went five innings. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two. Clinton's Cameron Hobson went five innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one.
