Hens' Ride Second Inning Wave to Win

June 10, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

There's an old adage, "When it rains it pours" and that is exactly what happened between the Chiefs, Mud Hens and mother nature Wednesday night in Toledo. The two teams combined for a total of seventeen runs within the first four innings of the ballgame, as starting pitchers Tim Melville (TOL) and Taylor Jordan (SYR) were chased out of the game after just 2.1 and 1.1 innings respectively.

The plethora of offense from both sides was highlighted by an eight run second inning for the Hens' off of Syracuse starter Taylor Jordan. The fiesty Toledo offense combined for eight runs on seven hits, with non bigger than the one coming off the bat of SS Dixon Machado . With the Hens' trailing 3-1, Corey Jones singled on a line drive to right, followed by a Manny Pina HBP, and another single from DH Xavier Avery. The three base runners set the table for Toledo's hottest hitter, Machado, who made the most of the scoring threat by tatooing an offering into the seats for a Grand Slam and putting Toledo up 7-3.

However, the Chiefs used an offensive attack of their own to threaten in innings three and four putting up 2 runs in each, but it was the Hens' strong bullpen that kept the lead in tact and Syracus in check.

In the top of the fourth, the Hens' also used a half hour rain delay to their advantage as well. The momentum of the Syracuse offense was halted with runners on second and third, as mother nature decided to open up the sky and an incredible amount of rain fell upon Fifth Third Field, leaving the infield completely under water. After the Toledo grounds crew restored the field to playable conditions, relievers Melvin Mercedes, Ian Krol, and Alberto Cabrera each came on looking to halt the Syracuse bats. The three arms combined for 5.2 innings of relief surrendering 0 runs on just six hits. Ian Krol picked up his first win of the season in relief.

The offensive leaders for each club were Toledo's Corey Jones (3 for 4, RBI) and Syracuse's Darin Mastroianni (3 for 6, HR, 3 RBI)

So what looked like a game that may never end, turned out with the Mud Hens on top, finishing their home stand with an offensive explosion that they look to carry with them to Pawtucket on their upcoming road trip. The Mud Hens saddle back up tommorow as ace Buck Farmer takes the hill looking for win number seven against the Pawtucket Red Sox. First pitch is set for 7:05 at McCoy Stadium.
