Aberdeen Wings News Release
Friday night, the Aberdeen Wings (10-9-0) traveled to take on the Brookings Blizzard (7-8-3) in North American Hockey League action. The game was thriller, literally to the last second.
With just seconds left in the first period, Brookings' Mike Sauer scored to give the Blizzard the 1-0 lead going into the locker room. Puck possession and high-end scoring chances would be hard to come by in this game, but in the second period, Wings forward #13 Michael Soucier (F-Caledon, Ontario) would find the back of the net with assists to #19 Colin O'Neill (F-Odenton, MD) and #12 Austin Heakins (F-Pittsburgh, PA).
Tied 1-1, the third period would really get wild with shots on net. At the 7:24 mark, Blizzard defenseman Joey Lindberg would give Brookings a 2-1 lead. Soon after, Wings forward #12 Austin Heakins would score on great assists from #8 Drew Doyon (F-Indianapolis, IN) and #17 Will Hammer (F-St. Cloud, MN). Wings goaltender #35 Andrew Shortridge (G-Eagle River, AK) stopped 17 of 19 shots in the game. With 1:31 left in regulation, Brookings had a scoring attack that saw Sauer cutting towards the net. Unable to control the puck and skating, he plowed into a Wings defender and Wings goaltender, knocking Shortridge down. No penalty was called, but the play definitely fired up the Wings heading into the final seconds. With :06 seconds left, Wings defenseman #4 Eric Moser (D-Chicago, IL) would skate across the blue line and dump the puck in. Wings forward #8 Drew Doyon would gather the puck in the corner sending it up the wall to Wings forward #19 Colin O'Neill (F-Odenton, MD) would fire a pass to #12 Austin Heakins who was waiting to chip in the game-winning goal. The goal would come with the clock reading (0:00.05). The scoreboard would read 3-2 and a win for the Aberdeen Wings.
