Lone Star Brahmas Overcome Slow Start in 2 - 1 Win

Friday night saw the 2014/15 season's first meeting between the Lone Star Brahmas and the visiting Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The two teams came into the contest with their seasons going in opposite directions with Lone Star having won eight of their last nine while Rio Grande had dropped six of their last eight.
The first 20 minutes was a feeling out period for both teams. The Killer Bees seemed to control the tempo, but neither team had any real scoring opportunities as the teams combined for a total of 11 shots on goal. In the middle frame, play was much the same with the Brahmas playing rather uninspired hockey.
Lone Star started the third on a carry over power play from the end of the second, but were once again unable to get anything going. After Rio Grande was back to full strength, they controlled the puck in the Brahmas defensive zone for an extended period and got the Lone Star defense chasing. Parker Wood was left wide open off the left wing and Mason Van Tuyl fed him the puck from the far point and he put it past TJ Black at 2:11. Anthony Croston picked up the secondary assist on the play.
The goal seemed to wake the Brahmas from their slumber and they came roaring back with a power play goal at 4:43. Sebastian Vidmar sent the puck from the near halfwall to Caleb Thompson up top and he found defensive partner Anton Santesson cutting to the goal. Santesson carried it deep on the far side and fired a sharp angle shot that snuck past Ben Johansson to knot the score at one. The Brahmas kept the pressure on and just missed on multiple opportunities until 4:28 left in regulation when AJ Vanderbeck dropped anchor out front and Hunter Stanley found him from behind the net for a one timer over Johansson's right shoulder for the game winner. Bud Madejalso registered an assist on the play.
Black faced 20 shots on goal turning aside 19 for the win while Lone Star put 20 shots on goal as well. The Brahmas were 1 - 4 on the power play and held the Killer Bees scoreless on three opportunities.
