Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - RF Jeremy Hazelbaker set a Springfield Cardinals Single Game Record with four doubles on Friday, helping lead the Cardinals to the 6-2 win against the Midland RockHounds before 6,067 fans at Hammons Field.
The previous high for most doubles by a Springfield Cardinal in a single game was three, done by five prior Cardinals. Hazelbaker tied the mark with his third double in the sixth inning, before driving his record-setting fourth double to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
The Cardinals (20-34) jumped in front against RHP Jake Sanchez (L, 4-4) in the bottom of the first frame. After CF Charlie Tilson started the inning by reaching on an error, he came racing all the way home on an RBI double belted off the right field wall by 2B Bruce Caldwell. Hazelbaker followed suit with his first double of the night, crushing an RBI ground-rule double to left-center field to bring in Caldwell for the early 2-0 lead.
Springfield LHP Jimmy Reed (W, 1-0), in his first Double-A outing of the season, had kept the RockHounds (29-25) off the board in the first, but Midland cut the deficit in half in the second. With two away, DH Carson Blair swatted a solo shot to left-center field, decreasing the Cardinals lead to 2-1.
The RockHounds completed the comeback with their second tally in the top of the third. SS Wade Kirkland started the stanza with a single, before Reed battled back with a pair of fly outs. However, LF Josh Whitaker struck with a two-out RBI double, plating Kirkland to square the score at 2-2.
After a pair of scoreless innings from Reed in the tops of the fourth and fifth, the Cardinals swung back in front with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tilson sparked the rally with a leadoff single, before Caldwell reached on an error that put runners at first and second with no outs. After a foul out, 1B Jonathan Rodriguez ripped a go-ahead RBI single through the right side, bringing in Tilson to make it 3-2. One out later, with two on and two away, C Michael Ohlman pulled a three-run blast over the left field fence, widening the gap to 6-2 with his third long-ball of the year. With the homer, Ohlman has driven in at least one RBI in 10 of his last 11 games.
Reed continued to keep the RockHounds at bay with scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh, wrapping up his seven-inning start with only the two runs on five hits, while striking out three. RHP Corey Baker picked up right where Reed left off, tossing a scoreless eighth inning before giving way to RHP Kyle Barraclough for the ninth. Barraclough continued his great start in Double-A, dealing a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning for his ninth-straight scoreless outing to close the 6-2 win for Springfield.
