Hawks' Streak Fizzles in Dubuque
February 10, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Momentum from five consecutive wins could not propel the Waterloo Black Hawks to success on Saturday; the streak ended with a 6-1 road loss to the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Imon Arena.
The Hawks' string of victories had been the team's longest since last April. That run also came to an end with a loss in Dubuque.
The Fighting Saints carried play for much of the first period Saturday. They recorded the only goal of the frame at 18:33 in the shift after a power play. The puck was behind the Waterloo net before being sent out toward the top of the crease and redirected by Erik Pahlsson.
Dubuque added to the lead 1:25 into the second; Jake Sondreal claimed possession behind the Waterloo net and found Joona Vaisanen coming up the slot for the score.
Will Felicio produced the lone Hawks score on a one-timer from the left point at 13:19; Myles Hilman made the setup on a cross-ice pass from the opposite boards.
However, the Saints pulled away before the period ended. At 17:20, Michael Barron came speeding up the middle of the ice to score on a low shot to Jack Spicer's glove side. Just over two minutes later, Chase LaPinta flipped in a power play rebound.
Noah Powell added a power play score with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation. That goal - and another like it from Barron with 2:10 to play - came on the rebound of a shot resulting from an odd-man rush.
The Black Hawks see another in-state rival on the road Friday, visiting Buccaneer Arena for a game against the Des Moines Buccaneers.
