Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (25-9-3-3, 56 pts) host the Waterloo Black Hawks (25-13-0-1, 51 pts) on Saturday night at ImOn Arena.

Here are five things to know ahead of the matchup:

1. Cowbell Cup

The Fighting Saints entered the weekend tied with Waterloo at the top of the Cowbell Cup standings with 20 points each. After a 5-4 overtime loss against Cedar Rapids on Friday, the Saints earned a point to take possession of first place ahead of Saturday's meeting.

Saturday is the sixth meeting between the Saints and Hawks this season. Waterloo has taken three of the first five, with two of those coming after regulation.

2. Droughts Done

In Friday's loss, two Saints ended long-standing scoring droughts. Seamus Powell gave the Saints a lead early in the second with his first goal since Oct. 21, a stretch of 29 games. Powell's tally was his third of the season.

Shortly after, Gavin Cornforth netted his first goal in 19 games, a drought dating back to Nov. 25. Cornforth's conversion came on the power play, the Saints only successful man advantage in three tries on Friday.

3. Working Overtime

The Fighting Saints have played four consecutive games that have gone past regulation, splitting the quad with a pair of wins. Overall, the Fighting Saints are 5-3 in games decided in the 3-on-3 overtime period this season.

Two of the Saints' and Hawks' five meetings have gone past regulation this season, both resulting in shootout wins for Waterloo. Both of those two contests came in Dubuque, with the Black Hawks winning 5-4 on Sept. 29 and 1-0 on Dec. 30.

4. Bouncing Back

The Fighting Saints have proven to be a resilient team so far this season, bouncing back after losses effectively. After a defeat, the Fighting Saints are 11-2-0-1 so far this season.

Saturday's game will be the third of four-straight home games for the Saints to open up February. Dubuque split the first two contests with an overtime win over Chicago and an extra-time defeat to Cedar Rapids on Friday.

5. Hawk Talk

The Black Hawks enter as one of the hottest teams in the USHL, winning eight of their last 10 contests. Overall, Waterloo's record in the last 10 stands at 8-1-0-1 entering Saturday's matchup. The Hawks' only two losses in the stretch came to the league-leading Fargo Force.

On Friday, Waterloo came from behind twice to beat Green Bay 5-4 at home. Myles Hilman logged his second hat trick of the season and has eight goals in his last six contests.
