The Story:
Aidan Litke posted a career-best four points (1G, 3A) as the Winterhawks blitzed the Victoria Royals for a 7-4 win at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Saturday. Seven different skaters scored for Portland and goaltender Jan Špunar picked up 21 saves on 25 shots for his fifth win in six starts with the Hawks.
Portland went 1-for-3 with the man-advantage, marking a sixth straight game with a goal for the WHL's top-producing power play. The Winterhawks extended their point streak to eight games (6-0-1-1) with the win.
As they did on Friday, the Winterhawks scored in bunches to kick off the contest with a 3-1 lead through 20 minutes. Marek Alscher got the scoring started 8:45 into the contest with a laser from the left circle, assisted by Luke Schelter. And after Riley Gannon responded for Victoria a minute later, Ryan McCleary restored the Hawks' lead just 22 seconds after that as he finished off an Aidan Litke pass from the corner with a deflection through the five-hole of Tyler Palmer. Capping off the frame, Gabe Klassen grabbed his 14th of the year as he potted his own rebound at 12:22 for a two-goal lead.
The scoring action continued in period two with Dawson Pasternak's third of the year just shy of four minutes into the frame. After a touch pass from Klassen along the left-wing boards, Luca Cagnoni deftly maneuvered around the Victoria defense before sliding a backhand pass to Pasternak, who made no mistake at the back door. Riley Gannon's second of the game brought the Royals back within two, but the Hawks again fired back with goals from Litke and Kyle Chyzowski just two minutes apart. Litke struck with a long-range wrister at 11:52, followed soon after by a one-time bomb by Chyzowski to extend Portland's power-play goal streak to six games.
Victoria refused to go quietly, with Jake Poole bagging his second goal of the weekend late in the second period and Teague Patton making it a two-goal game in the third, but Robbie Fromm-Delorme put the game away with his 10th of the season on a Litke rebound at 15:40.
The Winterhawks return home for Hawks Fight Hunger night at the VMC this Tuesday, Nov. 15, against the Calgary Hitmen.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"I thought all four lines stepped up. We're getting good chemistry playing together and we're moving the puck well and clicking right now. It's really hard to come up here and play Victoria, but I feel we beat them in a lot of areas."
Winterhawks forward Aidan Litke
