Portland Winterhawks News Release

Red Deer, Alta. - The Winterhawks scored first, but two power-play goals and 35 saves from Red Deer netminder Kyle Kelsey gave the Rebels a 2-1 win on Friday.

Both netminders were on their game early, leading to a scoreless first period. Kyle Chyzowski found twine for the third straight game to finally open the scoring at 2:21 of the second period, collecting a Diego Buttazzoni rebound at the top of the crease and depositing it into the open net. But penalty trouble caught up with the Hawks, as Kai Uchacz and Kalan Lind collected power-play goals at 10:00 and 14:49 of the same frame to take a 2-1 lead.

After giving up two goals for the first time since Oct. 7, the Winterhawks came on strong in the final frame, but Kelsey had answers for every chance.

Jan Špunar put up a stout effort of his own in the Hawks' cage with 22 saves, including a highlight-reel stop in the third period to keep Portland in the contest.

The Winterhawks now head north to Edmonton to battle the Oil Kings at 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time Saturday night.
