The Story:
Josh Davies scored a hat-trick, Luca Cagnoni (1G, 4A) and Gabe Klassen (2G, 3A) chipped in five points apiece and the Winterhawks cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Kamloops Blazers at the Sandman Centre on Wednesday.
The Winterhawks have recorded points in four straight games (3-0-0-1).
Despite the result, Kamloops grabbed the game's first goal just over five minutes in as Connor Levis pounced on a Fraser Minten cross-crease feed, but a pair of Portland power-play tallies before the buzzer gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Cagnoni struck first on a long-range wrister at 6:09, followed by Davies' first of the night at 17:53 as he deflected a Jack O'Brien feed in the high slot.
The Winterhawks tacked on two more midway through the middle frame to stretch their lead. Davies potted the first, hammering home a Cagnoni saucer feed from the right circle at 11:22. Under two minutes later, Gabe Klassen made it 4-1 on a breakaway bid for his ninth of the year. Down by three, the Blazers pushed back with two late tallies from Shea Van Olm and Logan Bairos to make it a one-goal game heading into the third.
Portland removed all doubt in the final frame, though, rattling off three unanswered to complete the victory. Klassen struck first, deflecting a Marek Alscher shot at 3:42. Davies followed at 12:34, rifling a one-timer from the high slot to complete his hat-trick. Wrapping things up, Luke Schelter bagged the Hawks' seventh of the night on a solo effort from his own blue line, weaving through the zones until he wired a low shot past Dylan Ernst in the final minute of play.
Jan Špunar earned his 10th victory of the season with 20 saves on 23 shots, while Ernst finished with 41 saves on 48 shots in the Blazers' loss.
The Winterhawks conclude their road trip in Vancouver on Friday, taking on the Giants at 7:00 P.M. at the Langley Events Centre.
