Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Four times in their last seven games, the Brandon Wheat Kings have fought back to tie the score and force overtime, earning themselves a single point in the process. Unfortunately, in all four of those games, the second point has gone the way of their opponent.

Jagger Firkus scored 1:32 into overtime and the Wheat Kings fell 4-3 to the Moose Jaw Warriors. Carter Klippenstein, Brett Hyland, and Nolan Flamand scored for the Wheat Kings, who got 37 saves from Carson Bjarnason in the loss.

"They're obviously a pretty good team and this is not an easy barn to play in, so I thought we showedf some character coming back," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "Being down 2-0 and finding a way to claw back in the game, it's obviously disappointing not to get the overtime point."

It was the potent Moose Jaw power play that staked them to that 2-0 lead, and both goals came from Atley Calvert. Late in the first period, he tipped home a point shot by Denton Mateychuk, and early in the second he knocked home a cross-crease feed from Firkus.

In the second, the Wheat Kings began to turn the tide, starting with Klippenstein's goal. He picked up the puck at the left circle and fired a seeing-eye shot through traffic to beat a screened Jackson Unger.

Hyland gave the Wheat Kings even more momentum, separating himself and walking in with plenty of room from the left side of the slot. He beat Unger cleanly to tie the game.

Moose Jaw regained their lead almost immediately, as off a faceoff Lynden Lakovic corralled the puck, spun, and fired it home. But again, the Wheat Kings refused to quit. Early in the third, Tre Fouquette fired a shot that produced a big rebound, and Nolan Flamand was there to cash in on it for his fifth of the year.

Some huge saves late by Bjarnason forced overtime, including a goalmouth paddle save when Firkus appeared to have the open net. But the Moose Jaw sniper would have the last laugh. In overtime, he got a drop pass from Kalem Parker and snapped one home from outside the circles to give Moose Jaw the win.

The Wheat Kings get a chance to get back on the horse right away on home ice as they host the Regina Pats on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is 3:00.
