Kansas City Mavericks News Release
Independence, Missouri - Dale Mahovsky scored the first hat trick of the season for the Missouri Mavericks against the Wichita Thunder Saturday night at Independence Events Center, but the trio of goals was not enough, as the Mavs fell to the rival Thunder, 5-4. The hat trick was the first of Mahovsky's career. The Thunder scored five consecutive goals after the Mavericks scored three goals in the first six minutes of the game. Two of Wichita's five goals came while shorthanded. The IEC was once again at capacity for the Mavericks third consecutive sellout. The Mavs have yet to play a non-sellout at Independence Events Center in three home dates. Mavs' goaltender Charlie Effinger finished the night with 28 saves on 33 shots and Wichita netminder Adam Russo stopped 19 of 23 Missouri shots.
The Mavericks were hot out of the gate to start the game, scoring three goals in the first 6:35 of the contest. Ed McGrane put the Mavericks on top with a goal 3:06 into the first period. Assisting on the goal was Sebastien Thinel and Ryan Jardine. Dale Mahovsky added to the lead two minutes later. Thinel and McGrane added the assists on the Mavs' second tally. Mahovsky finished the trio of quick goals at the 6:35 mark. The Thunder responded late in the period with a goal from Brad Hemingway. Assisting on the Thunder's first goal was Andrew Martens and Matt Robinson. The Mavericks held Wichita shotless until the 9:48 mark of the period and outshot the Thunder 12-8 in the period.
The Thunder brought the score closer early on in the second period on a shorthanded, breakaway goal from Alex Bourret. Martens collected his second assist of the night on the goal. Wichita scored the equalizer with 50 seconds remaining in the period. A scramble in front of the net produced a loose puck with goaltender Charlie Effinger defenseless and Bourret buried it to knot the score up at three apiece. The Thunder outshot the Mavs 13-4 in the period.
Wichita took the lead five minutes into the third period on a power play goal from Jarred Mohr. Bourret and Robinson assisted on the goal. The Mavericks appeared to tie the game two minutes later, but a penalty had been called on the Thunder and a Wichita player touched the puck prior to the negated score. Mohr was ejected shortly after for slashing and the Mavs were granted a five-minute power play, but it was the Thunder who capitalized on the opportunity, getting another shorthanded goal, this time from Andrew Martens. Dale Mahovsky scored his third goal of the game for a hat trick, but the damage had been done and Wichita ended up with the 5-4 victory.
Sebastien Thinel extended his league lead in points from 18 to 20 with his two assists on the night and Andrew Courtney's six-game point streak came to an end.
The Mavericks next game is on the road at the Evansville Icemen this coming Friday night at the brand new Ford Center in downtown Evansville, Indiana. Missouri returns to Independence on Saturday against Evansville. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
