Harvey Lifts Lancaster To Game One Win

May 29, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Ryan Harvey did in Somerset once again as his ninth career homer off Patriots pitching lifted Lancaster to a 3-2 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader Wednesday at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater, NJ.

The Patriots rebounded, 8-0, in the second game, scoring six times in the bottom of the first to support a complete game shutout by left-hander Graham Taylor.

Harvey connected off Mitch Atkins (3-3) with one out in the top of the sixth hammering a ball well up the light tower in left field, to break a 2-2 tie.

Somerset tried to fight back in the bottom of the inning as Aharon Eggleston beat out a slow grounder to third for a leadoff single against Brian Grening (2-2). Butch Hobson went to his bullpen at that point. Jason Richardson wiped out both Jake Fox and Corey Smith on strikeouts. On the third strike to Smith, Eggleston was thrown out stealing to end the frame.

Jason Urquidez took over in the ninth. The right-handed closer retired the side in order to earn his fourth save in as many chances.

Lancaster grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first but missed the chance to put the game away. Blake Gailen led off with a single to left and went to second on a bad pickoff throw. Olmo Rosario moved Gailen to third with a single lined into shallow center. Travis Denker followed with a third straight liner, but Josh Kroeger made a sprawling catch in right to limit it to a sacrifice fly. Rosario was caught stealing before Daryle Ward and Harvey reached Atkins for singles and Kevin Howard walked to load the bases. Atkins minimized the damage by inducing Kody Kirkland to pop out to second.

Corey Smith belted a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the inning for the only Patriots runs of the opener. Lancaster tied the game in the third on a perfect bunt single by Rosario and a long double to right center by Ward, setting up Harvey's heroics.

Taylor (3-1) checked the Barnstormers on four singles in the second game. Oddly, three of the hits came in succession with one out in the second inning, but the Barnstormers failed to convert as Petey Paramore struck out looking and Tsuyoshi Takashima rolled into an inning ending force play.

The Patriots went on a spree against Lenny DiNardo (3-4) in the bottom of the first. Jonny Tucker singled to right center, and Eggleston beat out a bunt on which Denker made a wide, desperate throw, giving Tucker third. Fox banged a single into left for the first run, and DiNardo recovered to retire Smith on a pop up and strike out Luis Montanez. Eddy Martinez-Esteve walked to load the bases with two outs. Kroeger stung a single into right to drive in one. Adam Donachie brought home three more with a double to the wall in left center and, in turn, scored on Bobby Stevens' hit to left. Somerset added single runs off DiNardo in the third and Alan Johnson in the fourth.

The series concludes Thursday morning at 11:05. Lancaster will send Will Savage (3-3) to the mound against Josh Lowey (4-1). Fans may tune into 1600-AM, WPDC for the play-by-play action, beginning at 10:45.

NOTES: Harvey's homer was his 10th of this season...Three have come in five games against Somerset...He ranks second in the league...DiNardo is 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA at home and 0-4, 9.55 on the road...Kevin Howard was 3-for-5 in the doubleheader...Richardson and Urquidez have now gone a combined 19 innings without allowing an earned run...They have a total of 28 strikeouts...Rosario had three hits in the opener, his second three-hit game of the season.
