Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-15) won their fourth consecutive game, defeating the Sioux City Explorers (8-17) by a score of 8-4 on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. Trevor Lawhorn went 4-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Canaries offense which included the 1,000th hit of Cory Harris' professional career.

Sioux City scored right out of the gate in the first inning. Dustin Jones walked and stole second base to get in scoring position. Alex Llanos brought Jones home with a one-out single to give the Explorers an early 1-0 lead.

The lead would be short-lived, as Tim Hutting tied the game, 1-1, with his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. The Birds did not stop there in the first inning. The bases were loaded on a walk to Cody Haerther and singles by Beau Torbert and Cory Harris. Trevor Lawhorn drew a bases loaded walk to give the Canaries the lead, 2-1.

While the Canaries did not score more in the first, they were back on the scoreboard in the third inning. A series of three doubles by Haerther, Lawhorn, and Patrick Reilly scored two runs for the Canaries and gave them a 4-1 lead.

Sioux City's highlight came in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners, Canaries starter Ryan Ford made a pick-off throw to first base. The runner at third base, Derek Schermerhorn, read the pick-off and stole home plate to get Sioux City within a pair, 4-2.

In the fourth inning the Canaries loaded the bases on a single by Joe Anthonsen and walks to Haerther and Torbert. Harris grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Anthonsen to score, and give the Canaries a three-run advantage, 5-2. Lawhorn followed with an RBI single to plate Haerther and extend the Birds lead to four, 6-2.

The Birds added two final runs in the sixth inning. Harris recorded the 1,000th hit of his professional career with a two-out single, and Lawhorn followed with his fifth home run of the season to put the Canaries ahead by six, 8-2.

Sioux City got two runs in the ninth inning on the fourth home run of the season by Alex Llanos. However, the offense was too little, too late, in the 8-4 win for the Canaries.

Ryan Ford (3-8) got the win for the Canaries, pitching eight innings and giving up just two runs on 10 scattered hits. Nick Sottung (0-2) suffered the loss in giving up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

The Canaries go for the sweep against Sioux City on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Thursday night will be "Parrot Heads Night" at the ballpark.
