Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains hit Fort Worth Cats righthander Jae Jung in two previous meetings this season, but that was not the case Wednesday night at LaGrave Field. Jung pitched six solid innings, allowing just one run on five hits, with the Cats using a four-run fifth to ease by the Captains 8-1, Shreveport-Bossier's sixth loss in its last seven games.

For the second game in a row, the Captains (37-36, 15-10 2nd half) got out to an early 1-0 lead, with small ball getting them on the board. Jonathan Reynoso led off the third with a walk against Jae Jung (5-3). After Kevin Griffin singled up the middle, Angelo Fermin sacrificed the runners to second and third. Bryan Sabatella then brought Reynoso in with a grounder to second, and the Captains led 1-0.

But also like the previous game, the Shreveport-Bossier lead was short-lived. Isa Garcia started the bottom of the third with a double, but was only at third with two outs. Cameron Blair then engaged in a 16-pitch battle with Captains starter Ronald Lowe (5-8), fouling off pitch after pitch before finally dunking one in front of rightfielder Selwyn Langaigne for an RBI single. Pat O'Sullivan then followed with a double to right-center, giving the Cats (42-31, 12-13) the lead for good.

Lowe pitched a scoreless fourth, but ran into trouble immediately in the fifth. Brian Fryer led off with a base hit, and Cameron Blair walked on four pitches. O'Sullivan then hit an RBI single, John Allen doubled in two more, and Ryan Patterson hit a one-out single to knock out Lowe trailing 6-1.

Fort Worth added a couple of late solo homers, by Michael Bell off Matt Petty in the seventh, and by Blair off Justin Dowdy in the eighth, to complete the scoring.

The Captains had only one baserunner in the fourth and fifth, but had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth when Reynoso grounded out to short. They had two more on in the seventh against reliever Tyler Pearson after a couple of walks, but Christopher Garcia chased a high fastball with a full count. Gary Lee and Scott Vander Weg then each threw perfect innings to finish out the win.

Notes: A Captains starter has not pitched seven innings or more since Jimmy Heard in El Paso on July 27, a streak of seven straight games...The first eight Cats in the order all had at least one hit...Jose Torres had the only extra-base hit of the night for the Captains with a double in the fourth...Thad Markray (3-7) is expected to be re-signed Thursday to take the mound for the first time in a month against fellow re-signee Lee Gwaltney (4-0), who is just back from the Mexican League and has not pitched for the Cats since early June.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains conclude their three-game games against the Fort Worth Cats, at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, August 6. The Captains are back home on Friday, August 7 to take on the Grand Prairie AirHogs at 7:05 p.m., with a 1st Choice Personnel Team Photo Giveaway.
