Akron's Todd Hankins slugged a pair of homers and drove in four runs to lead the RubberDucks to a 5-4 victory and a three-game sweep over the Bowie Baysox Sunday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium.
Turning Point
With the RubberDucks (3-0) up 1-0 in the fourth inning, Hankins belted a three-run homer to left field off Parker Bridwell to extend the lead to 4-0. It was Hankins' first hit of the season after starting 0-7.
Winging It
Michael Peoples (1-0) started and won for the RubberDucks in his Double-A debut. The right-hander from Weatherford, Texas, worked six innings and allowed just one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out three. Ben Heller earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
Duck Tales
Hankins came up again in the sixth and smacked a solo homer, also off Bridwell, and also to left field. He was 2-3 with 4 RBI on the day. Erie Stamets was 1-5, and has hit safely in all three games. Clint Frazier also extended a hitting streak to three games with a single in the third inning. Catcher Alex Monsalve made his first start of the season and went 1-4.
Notebook
The RubberDucks scored an unearned in the third inning off Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman (0-1), who started the game for the Baysox on an injury rehab assignment...The Baysox (0-3) pulled to within a run, 5-4, with three runs in the 7th off Justin Brantley, but relievers Louis Head and Perci Garner provided a scoreless inning apiece to hold the lead...The RubberDucks turned three double plays in the game, including one to end the game...Left-fielder Jordan Smith robbed Drew Dosch of an extra-base hit with a diving catch in the bottom of the third inning...Time of game: 2:50... Attendance: 2,741.
On Deck
The RubberDucks will begin the second leg of the road trip Monday night when they travel to Altoona for the start of a three-game series. LHP Rob Kaminsky is the scheduled starter for Akron, while LHP Cody Dickson is expected to start for the Curve. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM, the WARF iHeart channel, and the TuneIn Radio App.
