Fightins win in walk-off fashion
April 10, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Roman Quinn was long overdue for a hit and after 13 innings, the game needed a hero.
When Quinn walked up to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th with no outs, it seemed like a Reading Fightin Phils' victory was all but a sure thing.
Quinn guaranteed it when he hit a deep fly ball over the Sea Dogs center field Henry Ramos to score Angelo Mora, who got on with a lead-off triple, and to seal the Fightins 5-4 win over the Sea Dogs to split the four-game series.
The celebration that ensued on Quinn at second base wasn't the only wild thing that happened Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. It was a wild pitch in the ninth that allowed the Fightins to come back and win the game.
When Rhys Hoskins was at the plate with the bases loaded Sea Dogs reliever Rob Wort sailed a ball over Hoskins' head to the backstop that allowed Mora to score the tying run. Subtly, Mora scored both the game-tying run and game-winning run as he went 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. He is now batting .467 on the season. But before all the excitement there was one swing by outfielder Dylan Cozens that changed the game.
In bottom of the eighth, Cozens stepped up to the plate with Jorge Alfaro on second and proceeded to blast a 0-2 pitch to straightaway center field. When the 2012 second round pick realized the ball left the yard, he gave a solid fist pump, knowing he had hit his first home run of the year and brought the Fightins back to be down only one run.
Ricardo Pinto started the game for the Fightins and showed off his potential as well as his variety of pitches. That arsenal allowed him to strike out five over six innings of work. Yacksel Rios, Severino Gonzalez and Edubray Ramos followed Pinto's outing by pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings of work. Ramos also struck out two and picked up his first win of the year.
The Fightins (2-2) return to action Monday night to square off against the Richmond Flying Squirrels at 6:35 p.m.
Tickets for the 2016 season are available online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, and in-person at FirstEnergy Stadium.
