April 10, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves struck first on Sunday afternoon in Trenton, but could not combat a five-run Thunder first en route to a 6-2 loss at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Erie jumped ahead in the top of the first against Trenton starter Ronald Herrera. With one out, Alberto Gonzalez singled and moved to third on a Jason Krizan knock. Dean Green followed and lifted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Gonzalez for a 1-0 lead.
The lead was quickly erased by Trenton in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Tommy Collier. Tyler Wade and Dustin Fowler each singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Lane Adams singled home Wade for a 1-0 lead. Tyler Austin then walked, loading the bases for Jake Cave. Cave doubled home Fowler and Adams for a 3-1 Trenton edge. With one out, Jose Rosario doubled home Austin and Cave for a 5-1 Trenton lead. Collier would exit after the Rosario at bat.
The Thunder added a run in the fifth against reliever Confesor Lara. Adams led off with a single and moved to second on a steal. Adams advanced to third on an Austin fly out and scored on a Cave sacrifice fly, making it 6-1.
The SeaWolves attempted to mount an eighth inning comeback against reliever Evan Rutckyj. Krizan and Green each singled with one out. Dominic Ficociello followed and sent a ground ball to first. On the play, an Austin error allowed the ball to reach right, scoring Krizan, making it 6-2. Erie would load the bases but reliever Alex Smith quickly quieted the threat by striking out Austin Green and inducing a fly out from Kody Eaves.
Smith worked a scoreless ninth, earning his first save of the season.
Collier (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 0.1 innings of work.
Matt Crouse, Lara, Kurt Spomer and Paul Voelker worked the final 7.2 innings, combining to allow just the one run.
Erie will head to Bowie to begin a three-game series with the Baysox on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. Righty Brennan Smith will make his first start of the season for the SeaWolves.
