Early Runs Cave Erie's Hopes Sunday Afternoon
April 10, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
A five-run first inning for the Thunder and a strong effort from starter Ronald Herrera pushed the Thunder to a series victory over the Erie Seawolves with a 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park.
After the Seawolves struck first with a Dean Green sacrifice fly, the Thunder offense jumped on Tommy Collier in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Wade and Dustin Fowler singled to open the frame and Lane Adams plated Wade with an infield single. After a Tyler Austin walk, Jake Cave doubled to left-center to give the Thunder a 3-1 advantage.
Following a Vince Conde strikeout, Jose Rosario pounded a two-run double to left to take a 5-1 lead and chase the Seawolves starter from the game.
From there Herrera settled in, allowing just three total baserunners over his final 4.1 innings. The right-hander, making his debut with a Yankees affiliate, allowed four hits, no walks and struck out six.
Jake Cave added to the Thunder lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Lane Adams. Cave finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored and three runs driven in.
Thunder pitching struck out 11 batters on Sunday afternoon, giving them 30 through their first three games of the season. Alex Smith earned his first save of the season when he entered with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and retired Austin Green and Kody Eaves. He finished the game by getting Alberto Gonzalez to ground into a double play.
Dustin Fowler added a single and a walk, giving him hits in each of his first three games with the Thunder. The top three batters (Wade, Fowler and Adams) for the Thunder went 5-for-11 with five runs scored and a walk.
Your Thunder will begin a three-game set with the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) on Monday night at 7:00pm. The first 2,000 fans, ages six and up, will receive Thunder Magnetic Schedules presented by the Mercer County Improvement Authority. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
