New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats rode their bats to an 8-1 win over the Binghamton Mets on a frigid Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton.
The Fisher Cats (1-1) scored in every inning from the fifth through the eighth to power past the hosts, earning their first win of the 2016 campaign. The Mets (1-1) were able to tie the game early on, but couldn't keep the New Hampshire offense in check. Outfielder Dwight Smith, Jr. posted a career-best four RBI for the Fisher Cats in the victory.
New Hampshire opened the scoring in the top of the first inning against Binghamton starter Tyler Pill (L, 0-1). Roemon Fields led off with a double to left field that ticked off the mitt of Victor Cruzado, and moved to third on a fly-out to center by Jon Berti. With one away, Dwight Smith grounded out to shortstop Derrik Gibson, allowing Fields to score and give New Hampshire the 1-0 lead.
Binghamton evened things up in the bottom of the fourth, as Dominic Smith led off the inning with a single against New Hampshire starting pitcher John Anderson (ND). Matt Oberste worked the count against Anderson until he got a fastball that he rocked to the warning track in center for a double.
New Hampshire surged back into the lead in the top of the fifth. Jorge Saez led off the inning with a single for his first Double-A hit, and moved to second on a single by Jorge Flores. Fields drew a walk from Pill, and Berti earned his own free pass with the bases loaded to score Saez. With the bases still loaded, Dwight Smith, Jr. laced a single up the middle, plating Flores and Fields to extend the New Hampshire lead to 4-1.
The Fisher Cats touched up reliever Beck Wheeler in the top of the sixth inning. K.C. Hobson led off the frame with a double to left-center field, and Saez cracked his own double to score Hobson. After Saez was thrown out on the bases, Shane Opitz and Ian Parmley rapped back-to-back singles, and moved up to second and third on a double steal. Flores brought home Opitz on a sacrifice fly, stretching the Fisher Cats lead to 6-1.
New Hampshire tacked on a couple more runs in the seventh and eighth inning. Berti scored on a Hobson sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it a six-run lead, and Parmley came home on a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the eighth to make it 8-1 New Hampshire. The bullpen backed the bats, holding Binghamton silent from then on to secure the win.
Anderson took a no-decision, allowing a run on five hits and three walks over four innings and fanning four. Murphy Smith (W, 1-0) earned the victory with two nearly spotless innings, striking out one. The only blemish against him was an error committed by Flores. John Stilson gave up one hit and struck out one in his only inning of action. Danny Barnes issued a walk and whiffed two hitters in one frame. Chris Smith closed out the victory with a perfect ninth inning, recording two strikeouts.
New Hampshire will play their first-ever game against the Hartford Yard Goats at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Monday afternoon. Righty Jason Berken makes his Fisher Cats debut as the starter. The Yard Goats will be considered the home team, and the Fisher Cats will bat first. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m., and Bob Lipman and Ben Gellman have the call on the Fisher Cats Radio Network and NHFisherCats.com starting at 3:45 p.m.
The Fisher Cats will officially open their home slate on Thursday, April 14 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling 603-641-2005, and by visiting the stadium box office.
