(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Former University of Kentucky star Alex Meyer pitched six shutout innings as the Hagerstown Suns defeated the Lexington Legends 9-4 Saturday night.
Meyer (7-4) allowed four hits, struck out nine batters and walked none.
Hagerstown scored a run in the first inning on a two-out single by Cutter Dykstra and a double by Steven Souza.
The Suns added two more runs in the third. Brian Goodwin walked, Billy Burns singled, and both came home on Souza's double, giving the Suns a 3-0 lead.
Hagerstown added two more runs in the fourth. With one out, Bryce Ortega's triple scored Carlos Alvarez, who had walked. Goodwin then singled to center, scoring Ortega.
Hagerstown increased its lead to 8-0 with three runs in the sixth. Ortega led off with a single and Goodwin followed with a two-run homer to right field. Burns was hit by a pitch, and scored on Dykstra's double to left-center.
The Legends cut the lead in half with four runs in the seventh. Wilson Eusebio, who relieved Meyer to start the seventh, hit leadoff batter Matt Duffy with a pitch. Nolan Fontana followed with a single, and Justin Gominsky walked to load the bases. Mike Kvasnicka then singled to left field, scoring Duffy and Fontana, and moving Gominsky to second. Roberto Pena's single loaded the bases again, and Chan Jong Moon followed with a double to center field, plating Gominsky and Kvasnicka and trimming the Hagerstown lead to four at 8-4.
The Suns scored their final run in the eighth. Dykstra led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out, then scored on a single by Justin Miller.
Lexington starter Juri Perez (0-1), who worked the first four innings, picked up the loss in his Legends debut.
The Legends and Suns play game two of a four-game series Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
