Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Despite just three hits in the entire game, the Augusta GreenJackets won 4-3 over the West Virginia Power on Sunday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The win is Augusta's league-leading 23rd one-run victory.
The GreenJackets scored all four of their runs by receiving back-to-back bases loaded walks in the third and fifth innings. After the Power took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on Gregory Polanco's two-run double, the GreenJackets sent eight to the plate in the bottom of the inning and tied the game with just one hit in the frame. Kelby Tomlinson's single loaded the bases for Jesus Galindo, who walked to score Augusta's first run. With the bases still full, Shawn Payne walked to tie the game.
In the fifth, Polanco again gave the Power the lead with a two-out RBI single. Polanco accounted for all three West Virginia runs and did so with two outs in the respective inning. The GreenJackets answered in the bottom half of the same inning, this time scoring twice without the virtue of a hit. Four consecutive walks from Power starter Ryan Hafner led to the tying run before Jose Flores hit a sacrifice fly to produce the eventual game-winner.
Hafner (0-7) struggled through five innings, allowing just one hit but a season-high seven walks that led to four runs.
Augusta starter Paul Davis (4-4) fired seven innings for the second start in a row, getting his first win in a month. He allowed three runs - one earned - on six hits and a walk while striking out four. The GreenJackets got a perfect eighth inning out of Kyle Vazquez before turning things over to closer Cody Hall in the ninth. Hall quickly retired the side in order to earn his league-best 17th save of the season.
With the series even at a game each, the GreenJackets will hand the ball to Edwin Escobar (3-5, 3.70) on Monday against West Virginia's Zack Von Rosenberg (2-2, 4.73). It'll be another Feed Your Face Monday as fans can enjoy unlimited amounts of select concessions items from 6 p.m. until the end of the sixth inning. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
