LAKEWOOD, N.J. - A three-run 8th inning was just enough as Kenny Giles and the BlueClaws hung-on to a 6-5 win Sunday evening against the Savannah Sand Gnats.

A one-out, two-run triple by Aaron Altherr in the 8th broke a 3-3- tie and scored Kelly Dugan (4-for-4, 2 2B, 3 R, RBI) and Chris Duffy (3-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI) to give the BlueClaws a 5-3 lead. Josh Ludy's two out single scored Altherr for a 6-3 lead, but that base hit would prove to be the deciding run in the ballgame.

Kenny Giles walked three batters and allowed a hit when he entered the ballgame in the 9th inning. He struck out three and allowed two runs, but he stranded the potential tying run at third base and the potential game-winning run at first base to end the game. Giles' save was his fourth of the season and third save of the second half.

The win was the BlueClaws' fifth win in-a-row and leaves the, 0.5 behind Hagerstown for first place in the South Atlantic League North Division. The win puts the BlueClaws at 15-9 and a season-high six games above .500.

The BlueClaws and Sand Gnats will battle in Game 2 of the series Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. Lino Martinez (4-4, 6.18) enters off a win in his most recent start, and he will face Savannah's Logan Verrett (3-2, 2.84).

First pitch for Monday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Listen to all the action on WOBM 1160-AM and WOBM 1310-AM beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the BlueClaws Beat pre-game show.
