Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - After making his first 37 professional appearances out of the bullpen, Mike McCarthy stepped on the mound Sunday at Riley Park for the first time in a starting role. The right-hander hoped it would have turned out a little better, being knocked out of the game after just two innings as the Charleston RiverDogs (53-38, 14-10) crushed the Drive (44-49, 10-13), 11-5.
McCarthy labored through the first inning, allowing four consecutive one-out hits by the South Atlantic League's third best offense, culminating in a three-run triple by Casey Stevenson. The second inning didn't fare much better for the California native, as he was tagged for three more runs by the RiverDogs.
Despite finding themselves down by five runs after two innings, the Greenville offense wouldn't give up. A four-run third, in which eight batters stepped up to the plate, pulled the Drive within a run. Henry Ramos continued to swing a hot bat, lacing a two-run single and Boss Moanaroa followed with a two-run double.
Forced to go to the bullpen early, Greenville's pitching woes continued for Justin Erasmus. Kelvin De Leon's RBI-single in the bottom of the third put Charleston back up by two runs, and totaled two more runs an inning later.
The RiverDogs scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth on Francisco Arcia's two-run homer off Erasmus. Having joined the Drive earlier in the day from Lowell, left-hander Dylan Chavez - the Red Sox 14th round selection from the 2012 draft - kept Charleston off the scoreboard over the final two innings.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series on Monday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Luis Diaz (2-5, 6.75 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Charleston counters with left-hander Matt Bashore (1-2, 1.59 ERA).
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Thursday, July 19th for a four-game series with the Lexington Legends. The brief home stand starts with $1 Drink Night! For more information regarding tickets, call (864) 240-4500 or log onto GreenvilleDrive.com.
