Hickory Crawdads News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hickory Crawdads crushed the Delmarva Shorebirds, 13-5, before 1,908 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday evening .
Hickory (15-9, 51-42) swung in front with three runs in the top of the third inning against LHP Matt Taylor (L, 3-6). The inning started when RF Jordan Akins struck out on a wild pitch, but was able to reach first base as the ball bounced to the backstop. After singles by 1B Jhonny Gomez and CF Chris Grayson loaded the bases, 3B Trever Adams reached on a miscue by 3B Jason Esposito with Akins scoring on the play. Another Delmarva error and an RBI fielder's choice by DH Jorge Alfaro accounted for the other two runs in frame, making it 3-0.
The 'Dads doubled the lead with three more runs in the top of the fourth. Two singles by 2B Alejandro Selen and Akins, followed by a walk by Gomez, loaded the bases with no outs. Grayson singled in the frame's first run, before a double play ball from Adams and a Shorebirds miscue scored the other two, stretching it to 6-0.
Hickory tacked on another in the top of the fifth when 2B Alejandro Selen belted a solo home run. Selen finished the day with four hits and three RBIs.
The Shorebirds (7-16, 35-57) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the sixth against LHP Will Lamb (W, 4-6). With two on and one away, an RBI single by SS Mychal Givens plated the fifth-inning run, before a double play ball brought in 2B Jerome Pena from third in the sixth stanza, making it 7-2.
The Crawdads came right back with RBI singles by Alfaro and Selen in the seventh, and then capped the charge with four more runs in the top of the eighth. After Gomez's fourth walk of the game and a double by Grayson, Adams ripped a two-run single to plate both runners. One out later, LF Zach Cone singled Adams to second base. After a strikeout, C Kellin Deglan reached on an error that loaded the bases and extended the inning. A wild pitch and an RBI base hit by Selen plated the final two runs, putting the Crawdads in front, 13-2.
After two scoreless innings by RHP Nick McBride, the Shorebirds scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth against RHP Chance Sossamon. Sossamon, though, worked out of the eighth and then tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth, closing the 13-5 win for the Crawdads.
