Bakersfield Condors News Release
San Diego, Calif. â Three goals in the span of four minutes during the first period paced the San Diego Gulls to a 5-2 win over the Bakersfield Condors in front of 2,887 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena on Wednesday night. The Gulls took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with the win.
Both teams came out with good energy in this one, but it was the Gulls who came away with a first period lead. They tallied three times in the span of just four minutes to lead 3-0. Clayton Read, Mark Pederson and Dean Tiltgen each tallied, with Pederson's goal coming on the power play. Both teams put up 10 shots in the first frame.
The Condors got on the board with a power play tally by Jamie Cooke just 11 seconds into the second period. The advantage had carried over from the end of the first frame. San Diego wasted no time in renewing the three-goal advantage, however, as they answered less than a minute later. Sylvain Deschatelets scored his fourth goal of the series, firing a wrist shot past netminder Kevin St. Pierre for the 4-1 lead. The Condors managed a 16-5 shot advantage in the period, but trailed by three heading into the final stanza.
San Diego put up their fifth goal when Cory Cyrenne scored his second of the playoffs wit a wrist shot from the left circle. The rough stuff picked up with 9:30 to play, with 10 penalties and 36 combined minutes handed out. Bakersfield added a late tally from Jonas Lennartsson, his first of the playoffs, to bring the final score to 5-2 in favor of the Gulls. The Condors led in shots 35-21 despite the defeat.
The Condors will be fighting off elimination when they face the Gulls from San Diego on Friday night in Game Five at 7:00pm at the San Diego Sports Arena. Should the best-of-seven series require a sixth game, it will take place at Centennial Garden on Sunday, April 20th at 6:00pm. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a set of Condors ThunderStix. KGET-TV 17, Clear Channel Radio and the Active 20/30 Club sponsor the opening round of the playoffs.
Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden Box Office, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location.
