San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls exploded in the first period with three goals in four minutes and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Bakersfield Condors Wednesday night, before 2,887 at the Sports Arena. San Diego now carries a 3-1 series edge and can advance to the Taylor Cup Finals with a win Friday.
It took about half the first period before the Gulls got things rolling, but once they did, it was pretty much lights out for the Condors. San Diego opened a commanding 3-0 lead in the first, starting with Clayton Read's second postseason goal at 12:49. Read won a faceoff deep in the Bakersfield zone, crashed the net and put home the rebound off Samy Nasreddine's shot from the point.
Then a couple of one-timers from Mark Pederson and Dean Tiltgen added to the San Diego lead. Pederson notched his second playoff goal at 14:05, beating Kevin St. Pierre from the slot. Tiltgen buried his first at 16:49 after Read stole a pass from Condors defenseman Mike Marostega.
Bakersfield put a dent in the lead when Jamie Cooke potted his second goal 11 seconds into the middle frame. But Sylvain Deschatelets answered 39 seconds later with his league-leading fourth marker to regain the three-goal cushion.
Cory Cyrenne capped the Gulls scoring with his second goal 4:39 into the third period. R.J. Enga pounced on a turnover at the right wing boards and whipped a pass to Cyrenne, who beat St. Pierre with a wrist shot from the left circle.
Jonas Lennartsson made it a 5-2 game with his first tally at 18:38 of the third, but the game was long over by then.
For Trevor Koenig, it was just another day at the office. San Diego's backstop continues to put up stellar numbers, denying 33 of 35 shots tonight. Koenig has now saved 120 of 125 shots in the series; good enough for a 1.22 goals-against average and .960 save percentage.
Notes: The Gulls are 17-4 all-time against the Condors in the postseason, beating them in their previous five series... San Diego has never been eliminated in the first round... Bakersfield's goal 11 seconds into the second period broke a 129:46 string of scoreless play... Koenig is 17-8 in his playoff career with the Gulls, including three shutouts... Pederson and Kevin Grant have at least one point in each game of the series. They're tied for the league lead with six points...
Game 5 of the Taylor Cup Semifinals is Friday at the Sports Arena, starting at 7:30 p.m. If necessary, Game 6 is in Bakersfield on Easter Sunday while Game 7 would be back in San Diego on Tuesday. All games can be heard live on AM1130-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. You can listen to the Gulls Internet Radio Show's archives anytime on wsradio.com, with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
