
ECHL Alumni Fill AHL Rosters

PRINCETON, N.J. â The East Coast Hockey League is well represented in the 2003 Calder Cup Playoffs with 126 former players on the rosters and 11 former coaches as well as a former MVP behind the benches. Each of the 20 American Hockey League playoff teams had no less than two former ECHL players on their respective rosters.
Peter Horachek, who coached both Nashville and Trenton, is in his first season with Milwaukee while Bruce Boudreau, who led Mississippi to the 1999 Kelly Cup Championship, is in his second season as head coach with Manchester. Don Granato, who coached Columbus (Ohio) and Peoria, is in his third season with Worcester. Glenn Patrick, who was an assistant coach for Hampton Roads, is in his fourth season as head coach of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Geoff Ward, who coached Arkansas, began the season as an assistant coach with Hamilton, but was named head coach after Claude Julien was hired as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. Scott Gordon, the first ECHL player to play in the NHL and later the head coach of Roanoke, began the season as an assistant coach with Providence, but was promoted to head coach when Mike Sullivan was named as an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins. Scott Allen, who coached Johnstown, began the season as an assistant coach in San Antonio, but was promoted to head coach when John Torchetti was named as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers.
Mark Kumpel, who coached Nashville and Dayton, is an assistant coach with Portland. Stan Drulia, who was the ECHL MVP in 1990-91, is the assistant coach for San Antonio. Nick Fotiu, who coached Nashville and Johnstown, is an assistant coach with Hartford. Matt Shaw, who coached Mobile, is an assistant coach with Houston while Dave Bassegio, who was an assistant coach with Charlotte, is an assistant coach with Bridgeport.
The ECHL has affiliation agreements with 22 of the 28 teams in the AHL and there were more than 80 players in the ECHL on AHL contracts in 2002-03 and the ECHL had 450 call ups to the AHL in 2002-03. The ECHL had 400 call ups to the 27 teams of the AHL in 2001-02, the most since a record 453 call ups to the 19 teams of the AHL and the 13 teams of the International Hockey League in 1999-2000.
