Elmira Jackals News Release

One might think that playing at home would be an advantage to the Elmira Jackals as they tried to claw back into the Eastern Conference Finals against the Fort Wayne Komets, but two bad bounces off of glass stanchions turned into Komet goals in a 3-1 loss on Wednesday night.

The Jackals opened the scoring in the second period when Aaron Phillips registered his first goal of the post-season, ripping a rocket over the right pad of starter Tom Lawson for a 1-0 Jackal lead. Mike Hofstrand and Glenn Stewart picked up the assists. But then the Komets struck for three straight, starting at 13:18 when Chad Cabana put a puck over Marco Emond's left shoulder to tie the game at 1-1. Twenty-six seconds later Dustin Virag scored his third of the playoffs with an unassisted to give the Komets the lead, and at 17:42 Colin Chaulk's power play marker made it a 3-1 game.

In the third period, David Lessard was whistled for a five minute major for elbowing after knocking Kevin Bertram woozy in the corner. Fort Wayne failed to score on the ensuing power play, and the Jackals had hope. Then, Virag high-sticked Randy Murphy to earn a five minute major of his own with 7:40 remaining in the game. But the Jackals were unable to put any pressure on during the five-minute advantage, and couldn't score the rest of the way as the Komets held on for a 3-1 win. Lawson earned his sixth straight playoff win, allowing one goal on 30 Jackal shots. Emond took the loss, stopping 33 Komet attempts.

Game Four will be back at the Coach USA Center on Friday night at 7 pm. Tickets are available through the Box Office, open at 10 am every day this week, and through all Ticket Master locations, on line at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (607) 722-3711. Be there, wear white, and cheer the Jackals back into the series!
