Gulls Rally Falls Short with 5-4 Loss to Manitoba

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls (2-3-1-0, 5 pts.) closed out their first-ever road trip to Canada with a 5-4 loss to the Manitoba Moose (4-3-0-1, 9 pts.) in front of 4,148 fans at MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

The Gulls rallied from a 4-1 deficit behind goals by Nick Sorenesen, Nick Tarnasky and Andy Welinski, but conceded a third period goal at 13:29 from Nic Petan to drop the second consecutive game in Manitoba.

Manitoba jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Julian Melchiori and Jan Kostalek 3:42 apart in the first period before Gulls right winger Scott Sabourin cut the lead in half with his first goal for San Diego.

Moose captain Patrice Cormier put the Moose ahead by two again with a second period goal at 8:29 of the second period before nearly putting the game at bay with a shorthanded goal to make it 4-1 only minutes later.

Nick Soresen scored his first career AHL goal at 14:10 of the second period to cut the deficit to 4-2, springing for a breakaway and burying a shot to the glove side past Manitoba goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. Four minutes later, Nick Tarnasky scored his second goal of the season to make it a 4-3 contest, snapping a shot past Pavelec to put pressure on the Moose going into the third period.

At 12:11 of the third period with the Gulls piling on the pressure, Andy Welinski scored his first professional goal after finding a way to get his point shot through traffic from the point to tie the game at 4-4.

Nic Petan denied the Gulls a chance to earn at least a point on the night only 1:28 after Welisnki's game-tying goal, scoring the eventual game-winning goal at 13:29.

Despite 16 third period shots, San Diego couldn't find a way past Pavelec with Gulls goaltender Dustin Tokarski pulled for an extra attacker. San Diego outshot Manitoba 41-27, their second-highest shot total of the season (43 on Oct. 14 vs. TUC).

Tokarski, who arrived in Winnipeg earlier in the day after being assigned to the Gulls by Anaheim, stopped 22-of-27 shots and picked up his first loss of the season (2-1-0-0). Tokarski made his debut with Anaheim last night, stopping all five shots he faced after coming on in relief of John Gibson during the third period.

Brandon Montour again led all skaters with 10 shots on goal, extending his league-leading tally to 42 shots on goal for the season, 18 more than any other AHL defenseman.

San Diego's penalty kill finished 3-for-3, killing all three minor penalties and did not allow a power play goal for the first game this season. The Gulls power play went 0-for-3 on the night and finished the two-game road trip 1-for-6.

The Gulls head back to the U.S. after their Canadian road trip and visit Stockton for their next two contests, Nov. 4-5, to face the Heat at Stockton Arena.
