San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â The Taylor Cup Playoffs are right around the corner and the San Diego Gulls are in a dogfight trying to get home-ice advantage. But through all the stress of jockeying for a playoff position, the Gulls are still making sure that their fans are No. 1.
Here's what the Blue and Orange have been doing and will be doing away from the rink:
Feb. 13: Ronald McDonald, San Diego's newest "team member" practiced with the Gulls at the Kroc Centre. Ronald, head coach Steve Martinson and the rest of the team took part in two live shots with KUSI's Rod Luck, promoting the six "McDonald's Nights" and the fundraising partnership with the Gulls, McDonald's and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Feb. 21: B.J. MacPherson and Joe Bianchi attended Lemon Grove Middle School to promote I SAFE's game with the Gulls last Saturday. I-SAFE America is an Internet Safety Education Foundation with major emphasis on empowering kids/teens with knowledge on how to act responsibly and be safe online. The I-SAFE Foundation stands for the principle that all online users should act responsibly and be accountable for their actions while traveling the Information Highway.
Sunday: MacPherson and a representative from the Muscular Dystrophy Association will take part in a live shot with KUSI's Matt Olson. All three of them will be promoting "B.J. MacPherson Night" on Saturday, March 8. If you purchase an $11 ticket for that night through MDA, they will receive half of the proceeds. The live shot will take place around 7:15 a.m. on channel 9.
Monday: Gulls play-by-play announcer Chris Ello and Public Relations Associate/Broadcaster Jeremy Zager will be attending Rosebank Elementary School, as part of Read Across America Day. Both Ello and Zager will read a book to a class and explain the importance of reading.
Wednesday: Mike Garrow and Dean Tiltgen will be at John Marshall Elementary School's 10th annual Career Day. Garrow and Tiltgen will also read a book to a class and discuss the value of reading.
Friday, March 7: Trevor Sherban and Mike McGhan will take part in another live shot with KUSI, explaining the Gulls' efforts in youth-oriented programs, which also helps the Police Athletic League and Star Pal programs.
Saturday, March 8: The Gulls, in conjunction with Sharp Healthcare's "Sharp on Survival" program, are holding a special pre-game presentation for MacPherson. San Diego's former team captain had his career ended by a neck injury, suffered May 2001. Before the Gulls â Fresno Falcons game, MacPherson will speak about his injury and, more importantly, his recovery.
Saturday, March 8: Join your favorite Gulls in the Arena Club after the game for live music and great specials on Moosehead Lager.
Sunday, March 9: Come out to Dick's Last Resort for Tip-A-Gull 2003, when your favorite Gulls serve your every need as bartenders, waiters and auctioneers! You'll find skills contests, games and goodie bags for the kids! To top it all off, all proceeds will benefit United Cerebral Palsy. So be sure to join us at Dick's Last Resort in San Diego's Historic Gaslamp District, at 345 4th Avenue!
Monday, March 10: David Neale and Trent Clark will participate in three separate assemblies at Rincon Middle School. They will give a brief speech about the team and themselves before dressing up a student in hockey gear, stressing the importance of safety.
Tuesday, March 18: This is your last chance to wine and dine with your favorite Gulls players at the Pucks & Pasta Charity dinner at the Downtown Hard Rock Café. Come out and support the Gulls and Children's Hospital by joining the Gulls for a night of fun. You'll be a part of question and answer sessions, raffles and auctions for autographed Gulls memorabilia! And... you'll have a chance to hang with deserving Children's Hospital youngsters and their families.
Wednesday, March 19: Dan Cousineau and Sandro Sbrocca will practice with the San Diego Wolverines bantam travel team at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. Before practice, Cousineau and Sbrocca will talk to the 13- and 14-year-olds about the importance of team unity and determination off the ice.
