Gulls five games out of playoff spot

San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– Now there's only 18 games left in the regular season and the San Diego gulls are still on the outside looking in. After splitting four games last week, the Blue and Orange remain in fifth place in the West Division, five points (as of Monday) behind the Fresno Falcons for the last playoff spot. That will certainly change one way or another with two games this week against Fresno.

San Diego began the week with a loss in Victoria, before rebounding the next night with a three-goal victory north of the border. The Gulls then lost a tough high-scoring game in Bakersfield, but closed out the week with a tight win at home against the red-hot Idaho Steelheads.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Feb. 22 @ Victoria: The Salmon Kings scored three straight goals in a 5:27 span in the second period en route to defeating the Gulls 5-2 for just their second regulation win since Dec. 20. Victoria opened a 1-0 lead before Guillaume Fournier and Curtis Brown scored back-to-back goals to give San Diego a 2-1 lead. But that's when the Salmon Kings took over, lighting lamp three times in the second and once more in the third.

Feb. 23 @ Victoria: Max Birbraer notched three assists and netminder Mathieu Chouinard turned aside 26 of 27 shots, leading the Gulls to 4-1 victory against the Salmon Kings. As Chouinard was making key save after key save early in the game, Ian Forbes and Nick Ganga put San Diego up 2-0. Sean O'Connor gave the Gulls a commanding three-goal lead late in the second and they cruised from there. Victoria's Chris Corrinett and Sylvain Deschatelets finished the scoring in the third.

Feb. 26 @ Bakersfield: Mark Pederson netted a hat trick and Fourier recorded four points (1g, 3a), but it wasn't enough as the Condors over-powered San Diego, 6-4. The Gulls had two one-goal leads early in the contest, but Bakersfield came back each time to tie it. San Diego also came back from two one-goal deficits, but couldn't re-tie the game once the Condors grabbed their third one-goal cushion. Paul Rosebush, who netted a hat trick for Bakersfield, sealed their win with an empty-netter.

Feb. 27 vs. Idaho: Despite being out-shot 49-17, the Gulls still managed to eke out a 3-2 victory against the Steelheads. San Diego's offense was nearly non-existent in the last two periods, tallying only six shots over a 40-minute span and they were out-shot 22-3 in the second period alone, but carried a 3-0 lead into the third period. Idaho scored two power-play goals to cut the lead to one, but that's as close as it got.

PLAYER NOTES: Deschatelets (1g, 7a) and Fournier (3g, 5a) each have eight points in the last five games... Pederson (3g, 4a) and Birbraer (2g, 5a) each have seven points in the last five games... Pederson's hat trick Saturday was his sixth as a Gull... Wes Rypien was activated from the 30-day injured list Saturday... Mike Garrow (concussion), Grady Moore (concussion) and Evgueni Nourislamov (broken thumb) remain out of the lineup... Andrew Canzanello remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...

TEAM NOTES: The Gulls are 18-5-3 at home, but just 10-15-3 on the road... San Diego is 21-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 7-17-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponent three times since the all-star break (17 games)... They are 7-9-2 in their last 18 games...

UPCOMING GAMES: The Gulls go back on the road for a brief two-game trip Wednesday in Bakersfield and Friday in Fresno. Both games begin at 7 p.m. San Diego returns home Saturday against the Falcons, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. It will be Disco Night and the first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive a special Gulls disco wig.
