Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. â The BI-LO Center was host to four East Coast Hockey League teams and six exhibition games Saturday as the defending Kelly Cup Champion Greenville Grrrowl continue preparations for their regular season opener at Charlotte on Friday, October 11th. The Grrrowl, Charlotte Checkers, Greensboro Generals and Roanoke Express each played three games in a 4-on-4 format at the BI-LO Center.
"The 4-on-4 format gives the players more time and space on the ice", said Grrrowl VP of Hockey Operations/Head Coach John Marks. "It gives players a better opportunity to showcase their individual skills, and gives the coaches a better chance to evaluate those skills".
Charlotte Checkers GM/Head Coach Don MacAdam said, "It's an excellent event for this time of year. The guys get tired of training camp practices and inter-squad scrimmages, so it's nice to face some fresh competition."
The day started at 10:00 AM (Game 1) with Charlotte beating Greenville 3-2. Both Greenville goals were scored on the powerplay by Eric Lind at 7:57 of the first period, and Tyler Shantz at 5:50 of the second period. Grrrowl goaltender Ivan Jaglar played the entire game and stopped 24 of 27 shots.
At 12:00 PM (Game 2), Dan Carlson chipped in one goal and one assist as the Roanoke Express beat the Greensboro Generals, 3-1.
In the 2:00 PM game (Game 3), veteran goaltender Daniel Berthiaume stooped 23 of 24 shots as the Greensboro Generals dumped the Charlotte Checkers, 2-1.
The 4:00 PM game (Game 4) featured a 3-2 victory for the Grrrowl over the Roanoke Express. Tyler Deis, Mikko Sivonen and Chris Gustafson scored the goals, while goaltender Ryan McIntosh recorded 21 saves in the winning effort for Greenville.
At 6:00 PM (Game 5), the Charlotte Checkers spotted the Roanoke Express a 3-0 lead, then rallied for a 4-3 shootout win. Kurt Seher scored twice and Allan Egeland added two assists for the victorious Checkers.
In the night's finale (Game 6), Josh Legge and Tyler Shantz scored powerplay goals for the Grrrowl who beat the Greensboro Generals, 2-1. Grrrowl goaltender Tom Lawson stopped 12 of 13 shots in the winning effort.
Tickets for the home opener on Saturday, October 12th are on sale at the BI-LO Center Box Office and all TicketMaster outlets.
