Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) In today's final exhibition game against the Dayton Bombers, the Toledo Storm battled from behind twice, tied things at three with just 1:59 remaining in regulation, but couldn't find pay dirt despite a flurry of pressure in overtime, and ended up losing in the shootout, 4-3.
The Bombers scored first when former Toledo Storm team member, Andrew Williamson, ripped a snap shot out of the right circle over the right shoulder of Toledo's starting goaltender, Doug Teskey nine minutes into the second period. Dayton went up 2-0, when the Storm defenders misplayed a puck along the end wall and allowed 6'6"/290 pound Chris Roe of Dayton to take control of the puck and feed an unguarded Jonathan Gauthier sniping down the throat. Gauthier didn't waste the chance, blistering a snap shot over the catching hand of the Storm's replacement goaltender, Brian Finley, at 15:57 of the second.
Toledo began to dig out of the deficit fifty seconds later, when Darcy Anderson ripped a high, hard snap shot of his own out of the right circle, beating goaltender Olivier Dannel, over his left shoulder. The puck quickly ricocheted out of the net, prompting a Dayton dispute over the goal, but it was to no avail as the score stood at 2-1, Dayton. But not for long, as 1:47 later, Nick Parillo, who was flying around all night for the Storm, broke behind the Dayton defense and refused to give up as he drove to the net, finally finding a space between Dannel's legs to tie things at two.
Dayton went up again at the 11:54 mark of the third, when Toledo's defense got caught in the offensive end, and the Bombers' David Brosseau was off to the races, beating Finley to the glove side. But Toledo did not give up, continued to pound the pressure, and ultimately capitalized on the power play when Dan Carney went back door to Mike Bayrack, who was planted at the top of the crease to tie things at three with just 1:59 remaining.
In the overtime, Toledo outshot Dayton 9-1, but Dannel was perfect in the OT--and equally so in the shootout, stopping all four Storm players who tried; and Dayton's Fred Slukynsky and David Brosseau scored for the Bombers to sweep the home-an-home exhibition series.
