Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich. - In dominant fashion on Wednesday, the Growlers won their eighth game of the season against the Battle Creek Battle Jacks, taking down the Creek 12-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Battle Creek's offense struggled from pitch number one. In another spectacular outing, Eamon Horwedel gave up just one baserunner across the first five innings, retiring 14 straight batters after giving up a leadoff double in the second. Overall, Horwedel retired 21 of the 24 batters he faced across seven innings, giving up just three hits while not giving up a walk. In his ninth quality start of the season Horwedel's final line was: W, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 8 8 K.
- Alongside Horwedel's lights out performance on the bump, Kalamazoo's offense, although stifled early, broke through in the fourth and fifth. After a pair of singles and a sac bunt in the fourth, a strikeout brought up Joey Winters with two outs. Following a conference, a wild pitch scored Anthony Stephan for the first run of the game.
- Kalamazoo blew the doors open in the fifth inning scoring five runs on four walks and two two-RBI doubles from Banks Tolley and Gabe Springer with all of the offense coming with two outs.
- The Growlers extended their dominance over Battle Creek with another five run inning in the eighth. Nine batters came to the plate to bring in the five runs on three hits, two walks, two errors and a sac fly. The crooked number was the eleventh time the Growlers have scored four-plus runs in an inning against the Creek
- Jake Ickes closed it out in the ninth after a Battle Creek push, scoring three runs behind a litter of flair singles.
