Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday announced that defenseman Danny Groulx (GROO) and forward Tomas Kopecky (koh-PEHTS-kee) were assigned by the Detroit Red Wings to the American Hockey League club.

The second-year pros were members of the 2002-03 Griffins squad that won the AHL's Central Division championship and advanced to within one game of the Calder Cup finals.

Groulx, 22, appeared in 71 games, contributing 10 points (3-7-10), 52 penalty minutes and a plus-seven rating. Kopecky, 21, won AHL Rookie of the Month honors last February, on the way to finishing sixth on Grand Rapids with 38 points (17-21-38) in 70 outings. His plus-18 rating tied for second among league rookies.

The pair will be in Grand Rapids for the start of Griffins training camp this Sunday, Sept. 28, alongside 13 other players who were assigned by Detroit last Saturday: forwards Ryan Barnes, Hugo Boisvert, David Brisson, Matt Ellis, Carsen Germyn, Derek King, Kevin Miller, Michel Picard and Tim Skarperud, and defensemen Paul Ballantyne, Travis Richards, Aaron Schneekloth and Dave Van Drunen.

The Griffins' complete training camp roster and itinerary will be released this Friday, Sept. 26.
