Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Augusta, GA (July 14, 2009) - Robbie Grossman entered Tuesday night's game at Lake Olmstead Stadium with the South Atlantic League's second longest on base streak of the 2009 season at 28 games. The Power center fielder went 0-for-4 in the contest, bringing his remarkable streak to an end as the Power fell hard in a 9-1 loss to the Augusta GreenJackets.
For the second night in a row, West Virginia had several chances to score, but couldn't cash in. They plated their lone run in the third inning when Adenson Chourio scored on a wild pitch. They had the bases loaded and nobody out two innings later, but were kept off the board. The Power had the bases full and nobody out when Kyle Nicholson struck out Quincy Latimore, then got Robbie Grossman to hit a groundball to the first baseman Josh Mazzola who threw out Erik Huber at home plate for the force out before Nicholson fanned Tony Sanchez to end the inning.
Augusta plated their first two runs in the fourth inning. James Simmons's groundout plated Mazzola to tie the game and Johnny Monell's base hit brought Andy D'Alessio home to give the 'Jackets the lead. The GreenJackets had two on and two out in the sixth inning when Charlie Culberson's pop up into foul ground was dropped by Calvin Anderson. Culberson ripped an RBI single a couple of pitches later and the next batter Vladimir Frias belted a two run triple to cap the inning.
Though the sixth inning was tough for West Virginia, the eighth inning was even worse. Augusta scored four times on just one hit. Yoffri Martinez issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to Mazzola and Mike Loberg before Simmons hit a groundball that went through the legs of Jeremy Farrell. The fielding error produced the final two runs of the game.
Kyle Nicholson (5-8) allowed just an unearned run on seven hits over six innings and struck out seven batters in a winning effort. Quinton Miller (0-1) allowed three runs, only two earned on six hits over five and a third and was tagged with the loss. West Virginia issued seven free passes on the night and committed four errors.
West Virginia fell to 38-49 overall, and 11-6 in the second half after the loss, while the GreenJackets improved to 45-43 overall and 10-9 in the second half after the win. Grossman's incredible streak began back on June 6th against Kannapolis, and the streak began with a ten game hitting streak. He hit safely in 21 of the 28 games and walked 20 times during the steak as well. Erik Huber and Danny Bomback paced the Power with two hits a piece. Starling Marte singled and Tony Sanchez was hit by a pitch, extending their on base streaks to 15 and 10 games respectively. Jeremy Farrell belted a single in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and his on base streak to 16.
West Virginia will continue the four game series against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Wednesday night. The Power will start right hander Rafael De Los Santos (0-2, 6.32) and the GreenJackets will counter with left hander Eric Surkamp (5-4, 3.59). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
