Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- The Hagerstown Suns (6-13) won their first home game of the second half of the South Atlantic League season, riding a go-ahead, two-run double by second baseman Steve Lombardozzi in the bottom of the eighth inning to a 5-4 win over the visiting Greenville Drive (8-10).
Hagerstown trailed, 4-3, going into the eighth, and Greenville reliever Mitch Herold picked up two quick outs to put the Suns' backs against the wall. Hagerstown designated hitter Michael Guerrero's grounder snuck under the glove of Drive third baseman Will Middlebrooks, however, allowing Guerrero to reach first with a single. Centerfielder Chris Curran followed with a dribbler to Herold's right, but the pitcher could not field the ball cleanly, and Curran sped into first as well.
Lombardozzi stepped to the plate next, and made Greenville pay for its two-out miscues with a double to right that bounced past Drive right fielder Mitch Dening and brought home Guerrero and Curran for a 5-4 Hagerstown lead.
Suns Opening Day starter Brad Peacock (3-8) -- making just his second relief appearance of the season -- shut down Greenville in the top of the ninth to complete his fourth inning of scoreless work out of the bullpen. Peacock allowed just two hits while striking out six, picking up the win and lowering his earned-run average to 4.30 for the season.
The Suns trailed 4-1 after three innings of play, with the Drive jumping on Hagerstown starter Trevor Holder in the first start of his Suns career. A third-round pick by the Washington Nationals in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft in June, Holder lasted just two and a third innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.
Patrick McCoy relieved Holder with two outs in the top of the third, starting a run of two and a third innings of scoreless, one-hit ball.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hagerstown began to cut into the Drive's three-run lead, starting with a one-out single by left fielder Robby Jacobsen. Designated hitter Michael Guerrero and centerfielder Chris Curran followed by directing balls to nearly the exact same spot in right-centerfield, coming through with an RBI double and RBI triple, respectively. Guerrero finished the day three-for-four with an RBI, while Curran picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run.
McCoy and Peacock were masterful for Hagerstown out of the bullpen, combining for six and a third shutout innings, surrendering just three hits while fanning eight.
The Suns and Drive continue their four-game series with an 11:05 a.m. Baseball Camp Day at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday, with gates opening bright and early at 10:05 a.m.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Visit the Suns on the web at www.hagerstownsuns.com. The Suns are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties.
