Augusta Wins Second Straight, 9-1

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets took advantage of four West Virginia Power errors and an 11-hit offensive attack en route to a 9-1 victory over the Power at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Tuesday night.
West Virginia scored first on a wild pitch to bring Adenson Chourio home in the third inning but it was all Augusta after that. In the fourth the Jackets had runners and second and third with one out when James Simmons grounded out to tie the game. Johnny Monell followed with a single to give the Jackets the lead - the second night in a row Augusta has led the game on a Monell hit.
The onslaught continued in the sixth inning when the Jackets scored three times on three hits and with the help of three Power miscues. Juan Perez singled and moved to second on a throwing error by catcher Tony Sanchez. Wendell Fairley walked with two outs and with Charlie Culberson at bat, the Power nearly escaped the jam on a pop up to first. Calvin Anderson, the All-Star first baseman, dropped an easy pop fly to extend the inning and the Jackets made West Virginia pay. Culberson singled to bring in a run and Vladimir Frias tripled to bring in two more, extending the Jackets lead to four runs.
Augusta batted around in the eighth inning, as West Virginia struggled to find someone that threw strikes. With just one hit in the inning, the bases were loaded with one out when Yoffri Martinez walked two GreenJackets runs home. After a fielder's choice brought the second out, Simmons hit a grounder through the legs of West Virginia's third baseman to bring in two more runs.
In other offensive highlights, Josh Mazzola doubled twice as part of a three-hit night. With two walks, Mazzola was not retired by the Power all night long.
Kyle Nicholson (5-8) got the win in one of his shortest starts in a while. The righty moved in and out of trouble through six innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just an unearned run and a walk with seven strikeouts. Kyle Woodruff and Mitch Lively slammed the door shut out of the bullpen, firing three scoreless innings of one-hit baseball.
Quinton Miller (0-1) picked up his first loss with the Power in a 5.1 inning stint, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
In game three of the four-game series, Eric Surkamp (5-4, 3.59) gets the ball for the Jackets to face Rafael De Los Santos (0-2, 6.32).
