Grizzlies Snap Skid With Game One Victory
May 28, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, ILL.- The Gateway Grizzlies snapped a five game losing streak Thursday evening with a game one victory over the Washington Wild Things 2-1.
Great pitching outweighed the hitting in game one as both starters were solid. Grizzlie Mark Brackman went six innings allowing four hits and an unearned run while fanning 10.
Wild Things Zach Groh was equally effective tossing six shutout innings and striking out eight while giving up three hits.
John Maschino (1-0) collected the victory for the Grizzlies throwing a perfect seventh inning and striking out two.
The Grizzlies took advantage of miscues by Wild Things pitchers Kendrick Martin and Jon Lewis as they pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh off one hit, three walks and a wild pitch. The wild pitch by Lewis scored Grizzlies catcher Kevin Kotch for the walk off victory.
Offensively the Grizzlies were lead by first baseman Chad Rothford who collected two hits in three at bats. Stephen Douglas and Adrian Cantu accounted for the two other Gateway hits.
Game two will immediately follow with southpaw Joel Boeschen toeing the mound for the Grizzlies. Washington will counter with lefty Craig Snipp.
