Rascals Rally Falls Short

O'FALLON, MO - The River City Rascals rallied with four runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Florence Freedom walk away with a 10-8 victory at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Freedom outscored the Rascals 30-13 in the three game sweep.

The Rascals (4-3) came to the plate in the ninth trailing 10-4 with former Rascal, Jonathan Miller, on the mound. Scott Houin singled and Kevin Reynolds followed with an RBI double to left-centerfield. Chris Colton followed with a single to left to score Reynolds and Scott Robinson deposited a two-run homer into the Rascals' bullpen to make it 10-8. Miller would settle down and retire the next three straight to preserve the win.

Florence (5-2) jumped out early, plating two runs in the opening stanza and three more in the second. Erold Andrus led off with a double and scored on a Scott Robinson error off the bat of Billy Mottram. Florence tacked on another run on a RBI single by Tim Grogan. Justin Pickett and Mottram both went deep in the second for a 5-2 Freedom advantage.

River City tallied three runs in the first two frames before scoring again in the seventh. Colton launched a two-run shot into the left field bleachers in the first and Cameron Howell plated JoJo Batten in the second on a sacrifice fly.

The Freedom continued the scoring barrage with three runs combined in the eighth and ninth innings. Mottram connected on his second homer of the night in the ninth and Grogan delivered an RBI double in the eighth.

Tyler Musselwhite (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season, tossing four innings allowing six runs (five earned) on ten hits while striking out four.

Everett Saul (2-0) picked up his second win, going 6.1 innings allowing five hits and three runs while striking out four.

Colton was 3-4 with the home run and three runs batted in while Jorge Gutierrez finished 2-4 with a double.

Jason Lowey tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hits while striking out two.

The Rascals will now host the Washington Wild Things in a three game series beginning Friday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. with a 6:45 p.m. pre-game show on 590 the Fan KFNS and KFNS.com.
