Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - Two dominant pitching performances left the Rockford offense parched on Thirsty Thursday.
Kyle Kearcher and Doug Brooks each pitched complete-game victories as the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti swept a doubleheader from the RiverHawks, 7-1 and 8-1, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,488 at Road Ranger Stadium.
The RiverHawks were swept in the three-game series, their first at home this year. They have dropped four in a row.
In the opener, Kearcher (1-0) pitched a four-hitter. After Caleb Fields broke a scoreless tie with a third-inning single, Kearcher retired 12 straight RiverHawks.
Ypsilanti rallied to take the lead with a five-run fifth inning. Roberto Mena tied the game with a RBI single and scored the go-ahead run on Zach Pace's single to left field. With two outs, Jimmy Baker hit a three-run homer to the beer garden in right.
Rockford starter Mike Rogers (0-1) lasted just 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs.
In the nightcap, Brooks (1-1) scattered three hits and struck out six without a walk.
The Sliders scored four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh. In the top of the fifth, Don Lombardi broke a scoreless tie with a RBI single. Jeremy Jones later doubled home two with two outs. Rockford starter Kyle Wright (0-1) lasted five innings and took the loss.
The RiverHawks were hitless until Ross McCoy's two-out double in the bottom of the fifth. Jono Brooks singled him home for Rockford's only run.
The RiverHawks' first homestand continues with a three-game series against the Lake Erie Crushers. The series starts at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The FatWallet.com Friday Night Fireworks Series follows the game.
