O'FALLON, MO - The Florence Freedom used another big hit night to finish off a three game sweep of the River City Rascals, downing them 10-8 Thursday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
Florence connected for 18 hits, five of which came from Tim Grogan who finished a perfect 5-5 with three RBI. Billy Mottram continued his unbelievable start, going 3-5 with two more homeruns to give him six now on the season through seven games.
The Freedom never trailed Thursday night as they took a 2-0 lead after one.
River City tied the game at two in the bottom of the first when Chris Colton hit a two-run homer. But Florence came right back in the second inning with three more. Justin Pickett hit his second homerun of the series, a solo blast, which was followed up by Mottram's first homerun of the game later in the inning to make it 5-2.
Everett Saul started for Florence and after a shaky start, settled down in the middle innings. Saul allowed three runs through the first two but finished to last through 6.1 innings, allowing four runs total, three of which were earned to improved to 2-0.
Florence built a 10-4 lead going into the ninth. Jonathan Miller came in from the pen to nail and was touched up to begin the inning. Miller allowed the first four he faced to reach with the fourth batter, Scott Robinson, connecting for a two run homer to cut the lead to 10-8. Miller settled down and retired the next three he faced to secure the win.
With the sweep, the Freedom now sit at 5-2 on the season. They return home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. for a six game home stand. Friday nights are Fox 19 Fireworks Fridays. Fans can watch the game live on Fox19.com or tune in at 106.7 FM WNKR.
