Utah Grizzlies News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies National Hockey League affiliate, the Phoenix Coyotes, announced today that they have signed forward David Spina to a professional tryout and that he will be in the line-up Friday night when the Grizzlies play the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Spina just completed his four-year college career playing 138 games with Boston College totaling 103 points (49-54 -103). The 5-11, 185-pound right wing played in all 40 regular season games for the Golden Eagles during his senior year scoring 13 goals with 15 assists. He finished the season tied for the team lead with four game winning goals and led the club with two shorthanded goals. Spina earned Hockey East All-Academic Team recognition in 2002-03 and was the 2004-05 recipient of the Edward J. O'Brien, Jr. Hockey Scholarship.

The 21-year-old Spina was born in Springfield, Illinois but moved to Seattle, Washington when he was two years old. His family moved to Mesa, Arizona when Spina was eight, where he joined the Desert Youth Hockey Association (DYHA). Spina played youth hockey for the DYHA Roadrunners and Coyotes from age eight to 15 and attended Red Mountain High School for his sophomore year.

"This young man represents the first ever Arizona youth hockey graduate to play in our organization, and he is deserving of this recognition, " said Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett. "Dave will be given an opportunity to impress Pat Conacher and the Grizzlies coaching staff. He has a solid college hockey background and we look forward to seeing him make the most of this opportunity. Our scouts have followed his college career and his Arizona hockey background is a nice side bar, but he is deserving of this opportunity on the merit of his hockey ability."

The Grizzlies continue their four-game road trip tomorrow night in Grand Rapids against the Griffins. Face-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM (mst) at the Van Andel Arena and all the action can be heard on ESPN Radio-AM 1230.
