Fresno Grizzlies News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The ending of the Fresno Grizzlies (8-5) 6-5 loss to the Salt Lake Bees (3-10) in 11 innings Tuesday night was almost unexplainable. After the Grizzlies fought to tie the game in the ninth, and take a 5-3 lead in the top of the 11th, the Bees answered back in the bottom half of the inning off closer James Hoyt (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) and scored the game-ending run on a bizarre relay throw error by right fielder Domingo Santana. The tying run had come across on the play (single by Ryan Wheeler), but the throw in from right field skipped under the glove of second baseman Ronnie Torreyes and was mishandled further to allow Marc Krauss to race all the way around from first to plate the game-ending run. In the five games between the two teams this season, four have been decided by one run, and two games have gone extra innings.
The Grizzlies went ahead in the top half of the 11th when Domingo Santana scored on a fielder's choice, and then was followed by Alex Presley who added a RBI single three batters later. The night was seemingly too good to be true with the Triple-A debut of Hanford, California native and Fresno City alum Tyson Perez, who tossed 2.0 perfect innings in the ninth and 10th to be in line for the win.
Disregarding the last three innings, the game was a mix of missed opportunities for Fresno. Jon Singleton connected on an opposite field triple with two outs in the first and Matt Duffy reached a batter later on a hit by pitch, but Salt Lake starter Alex Sanabia (ND; 2 ER/6.0 IP) induced a pop out from Preston Tucker, who entered the game leading the PCL in homers (5) and RBI (17). Even as deep into the game as the eighth with only a run separating the teams, the Grizzlies advanced the tying run to third with two outs, but Matt Duffy flew out to right to end the threat. For the night, the Grizzlies went 3-for-16 with RISP with 10 men left on base.
The Salt Lake offense tagged Fresno starter Jake Buchanan (ND; 3 ER/6.0 IP) for nine hits, but a few stellar defensive plays from center fielder Andrew Aplin and right fielder Domingo Santana kept additional runs off the board. Andrew Aplin raced down a Kyle Kubitza line drive with a runner on to end the third, while Domingo Santana tracked down line drives in the right field corner on two separate occasions with runners aboard.
However, in the sixth inning the Salt Lake hits found landing spots as they put across the go-ahead runs thanks to a two-out RBI double by former Fresno Grizzlies outfielder Roger Kieschnick and a run-scoring single from Alfredo Marte. Kieschnick, who began the season 0-17 with eight strikeouts, is now 13-30 (.433) with four doubles, and four RBI over his last seven games.
The loss marks the end of the Grizzlies six-game win streak against the Bees dating back to last year.
The teams meet again tomorrow night at 5:35 p.m. PT when right-hander Dan Straily (2-0, 5.40) takes his turn in the rotation for the Grizzlies and faces righty Nick Tropeano (0-0, 4.09) at Smith's Ballpark. Follow the contest by listening to the play-by-play locally on KYNO-AM 1430.
