Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express saw its hot streak come to an end Wednesday night at Dell Diamond, falling to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 9-0. The Express offense simply could not find its footing as the Sky Sox pitching staff produced a strong outing. Round Rock snapped a three game win streak and is now tied with Colorado Springs in the series at one game apiece.
Express starting pitcher Jimmy Reyes received his first start since September 1, 2014 after originally scheduled starter Wandy Rodriguez was called up to Arlington this afternoon. The southpaw was attacked early by the Sky Sox hitters, allowing Colorado Springs to jump out to an early 2-0 in the second inning. Reyes escaped the inning by getting Sky Sox 3B Pete Orr to ground out before Colorado Springs could supply more runs.
Reyes threw solid third and fourth innings to keep the Sky Sox silent, giving up only one hit in the third and fourth combined. He finished the night with 4.0 innings pitched, four hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and struck out one batter.
Round Rock RHP Ross Ohlendorf entered for Reyes to make his first appearance of the season. Ohlendorf had been on the disabled list since the beginning of the season and crafted a respectable first outing, with 1.0 inning pitched, one hit, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
Express LF Alex Hassan ended Sky Sox starting pitcher Nick Additon's no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off single, giving life to the Round Rock bats. Hassan was victim of a fielder's choice, but the momentum continued to shift as Ed Lucas produced a single off of Additon to put men on the corners. The scoring effort crumbled with a Brett Nicholas line out to center field, keeping the score at 2-0.
Round Rock reliever Alex Claudio came into the game for Ohlendorf in the sixth and could not prevent the Sky Sox from adding more runs. A sacrifice fly courtesy of Colorado Springs LF Bryan Petersen brought C Nevin Ashley in to score, resulting in a 3-0 Sky Sox lead. Claudio got DH Donnie Murphy to ground out on a 3-1 pitch to halt the Sky Sox surge.
The E-Train bats came knocking once again in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles from RF Ryan Strausborger and SS Hanser Alberto. However, the Sky Sox defense manufactured a double play to bail Additon out of the jam and end the inning.
Claudio was able to suppress the Sky Sox batters in the seventh inning, keeping the comeback door open for the E-Train. Claudio finished with 2.0 innings pitched, two hits, one run (one earned), no walks and one strikeout.
Additon's night finally came to an end in the bottom of the seventh after Express first baseman Kyle Blanks hit a single into center field. He received the win, going 6.2 innings with five hits, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
Sky Sox CF Ben Guez kick started a six-run eighth inning for Colorado Springs with a two-run homer to deep center field off of Express LHP Juan Perez that slammed the door on Round Rock. Perez could not stop the bleeding and the game quickly went in favor of Colorado Springs. Perez got tagged with six runs (all earned) on four hits in 0.2 innings. He walked three batters and managed to only record one strikeout.
Game three is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch with a matchup between Express RHP Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (0-2, 6.52) and Sky Sox RHP Drew Gagnon (1-0, 523). Tomorrow night also marks the first Original Thirsty Thursday of the 2015 season with discount drafts and $1 sodas.
