CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Windy City ThunderBolts jumped ahead early on Saturday night and never looked back, beating the Gateway Grizzlies 5-2 at Standard Bank Stadium.
Grizzlies RHP Tyler Thompson was touched up for three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. Windy City (11-13) got the scoring started with Jacob Tanis' solo blast in the second inning to make it 1-0.
Thompson (1-3) started the bottom of the fourth inning by walking three straight hitters. Tanis then hit a grounder that Grizzlies' third baseman Ryan Soares who couldn't handle it cleanly, allowing a run to score. With the bases still loaded and one out, RHP Max Schonfeld came on to replace Thompson in his first relief appearance of the season. Schonfeld allowed a two-run single to Max White, which made it 4-0.
Schonfeld's outing was a bright spot for Gateway in the loss. He ultimately allowed just one run in 3.2 innings, which kept the Grizzlies in striking distance.
Gateway's offense found some life in the fifth inning when Grant Buckner popped a solo home run to deep left field. Windy City promptly responded with Jon Garcia's homer in the bottom half of the inning, which brought the score to 5-1. The only other run for the Grizzlies (7-19) came on Tyler Tewell's solo shot in the eighth inning.
ThunderBolts' lefty Danny Jimenez (2-1) dazzled on the mound, allowing just five hits and one run through 7 innings. RHP Tommy Nance earned his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.
