
Slammers Can't Dig out of Early Hole against Beach Bums

Traverse City, MI- The Joliet Slammers (11-15) couldn't dig out of an early hole against the Traverse City Beach Bums (15-9), losing to their Eastern division opponent by an 11-4 score on Saturday night.The Beach Bums scored four early runs against newly acquired pitcher Hunter Ackerman. CF Greg Harisis led off the inning with a walk. 2B Alex Thomasovich singled to put runners at the corners and 3B Jose Vargas homered, giving the Beach Bums the early lead. They scored one more run before Ackerman escaped the frame, making the score 4-0 Beach Bums after the first.
The Slammers got one run back in the third against lefty Ian MacDougall, but could have scored more. Catcher Jack Cleary led off with a double to left followed by a 2B Max Casper single. CF JD Williams laid down a perfect bunt, allowing Cleary to score. 1B Nate Roberts moved Casper and Williams over, putting two more in scoring position with only one out. But LF Phil Bates popped out and Mike Garza grounded out, stranding two. The Slammers trailed 4-1 after the third.
The Slammers scored one more run in the fifth inning. Williams hooked a changeup from MacDougall around the foul ball poll in left. His first home run of the year trimmed Traverse City's lead to 4-2.
But the Beach Bums would erupt for six runs in the fifth inning, knocking Ackerman out of the game. With one on Thomasovich doubled to put two in scoring position. Vargas singled to score two, advancing to second on the throw home 1B Yazy Arbelo drove in Vargas, and later scored when new pitcher David Kubiak issued a walk with the bases loaded, giving the Beach Bums a 9-2 lead. The home team would score one more run in the frame, leading 10-2 after five innings.
The Beach Bums added one more run in the eighth inning to take an 11-2 lead. The Slammers came back and scored a pair of runs in the ninth stanza. Garza scored on a wild pitch with Jack Cleary up. Cleary then drove in Alfredo Rodriguez with a single. But Joliet's comeback would end there as they fell by an 11-4 final. Ackerman (0-1) took the loss in his Slammers debut, allowing nine runs in four innings pitched on eight hits and three walks while striking out two. Kubiak and Adam Giacalone didn't give up a run in a combined three innings pitched. Reliever allowed a run to score in the ninth fame. The Slammers wrap up their series against the Beach Bums with righty Andrew Strenge on the mound tomorrow. The first pitch is at 4:05pmCT.
